Sports Minister launched the official website of the Sri Lanka Sports Journalists Association (SLSJA)

Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage launched the official website of the Sri Lanka Sports Journalists Association (SLSJA) at a special ceremony held Friday (17) at the Ministry of Sports Auditorium.

The event was attended by SLSJA President Susanthika Premachandra, General Secretary Karuppiah Ramakrishnan, Treasurer Sampath C. Perera, and members of its Executive Committee.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Gamage commended the Association’s efforts and emphasised the vital role of sports journalists in promoting sports development across the country.

“We need to focus on the development of sports journalism and recognise the pivotal role journalists play in shaping the sporting culture of our nation,” the Minister said.

“I congratulate the newly elected office bearers and consider it an honour to launch your official website. The Ministry of Sports will continue to extend its fullest support to your future initiatives.”

Speaking at the ceremony, President of SLSJA Susanthika Premachandra outlined the Association’s upcoming initiatives, stating that they plan to conduct internationally recognised training programs to enhance professional skills among sports journalists.

“We are also committed to maintaining gender balance and promoting the growth of female sports journalism in Sri Lanka,” she added.

General Secretary Karuppiah Ramakrishnan announced that the Association is planning to organise a friendship cricket tournament in collaboration with the Colombo Journalists Association in memory of the late journalists Sunil Abeyagunawardene, Palitha Senarath Yapa, and Kapila Krishantha.

He also mentioned the Association’s plans to extend financial support to children’s and elders’ homes, as part of its social responsibility initiatives.

Meanwhile, Treasurer Sampath C. Perera confirmed that the long-awaited health insurance project for members is nearing completion.

“This is one of our Association’s dream projects, and we are proud to say it’s almost finalised,” he said.

The launch marked another milestone in the SLSJA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the professional, social, and welfare aspects of Sri Lanka’s sports journalism community.
