Tharushi, Omel rewrite Schools Athletic records. Tharushi of Wickramabahu National School Gampola continued her record breaking streak in middle distance running this time set up girls’ under 18, 800m record with an impressive time of 2.07:90 minutes and surpassed the entry standard of 2.09.00 for the Under 20 World Athletic Championship next year. The previous day Tharushi, the Asian Youth Gold medalist set up a new 1500m record with a time of 4.29.47.

Meanwhile Omel Sachinthana of St. Sebastian’s College Kandana broke his own boys’ under 20, 200m record. He set up this record with 21.44 seconds on previous day and yesterday erased his own record with a time of 20.88 seconds in final. The 18-year-Old Omel, remains eligible to compete in the Under-20 category next year and has now met the entry standard for the World Athletics U20 Championships 2026 in Eugene, USA in both the 200m and 400m events.
